The Sweetest Thing: A New Jones

Watched Love Jones this past weekend and since then, I've been thinking about how much I love this film.

Sure it has its flaws-- Darius Lovehall, is this poet, who is working on, not a collection, but a novel? Gypsy Eyes? And who is this apartment for again, that Nina is living in?

That aside, its portrayl of modern, black love, remains one of the most authentic. It isn't trying to spin us a moral tale about how to get/keep a man/ woman. It is two people going in, the way it usually happens, headfirst.

I never get enough of Darius and Nina falling hard and fast into one another, and watching them navigate the ensuing messiness that is inevitable...and come to a happy ending.

Not to mention the soundtrack was that shit.

There's nothing wrong with a classic, but we could all use a new jones.

All the lovers get to work...

Good morning.

  1. I wonder if the 90's had something to do with it?

  2. The 90's were such an uncharted time...much more artistic freedom I sometimes think...

  3. Best description of this film and my life right now ever! I hope after this year of me time is up I find my way back home lol! I was 13 when I first saw this at the movies and it's funny how at 32 I obviously have not learned shit about love! I'm getting better now! This is the most realistic and beautifully aesthetic approach from a familiar perspective, although I don't know anybody's ass who would be knocking people down at the train station to catch me! Perhaps that's my destiny in 12 months!
